    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Royal-Thomian (the Royal versus S. Thomas' Cricket Match), the annual cricket match between Royal College, Colombo (a government-run non-denominational school accommodates approximately 8,000 students, making it the largest school in Sri Lanka) and S. Thomas' College, Mt Lavinia (a private Anglican school that has about 2,500 boys on roll) is the second longest uninterrupted cricket match series in the world, having being played for 127 years continuously. The original match was played between the Colombo Academy and S. Thomas' College in 1879, with schoolmasters participating as well as schoolboys. From 1880 onwards, only schoolboys were allowed to play in the match. It is the only school boy cricket match in Sri Lanka to be played over three days.
This match is generally referred to as the 'Big Match'.

The Battle of the Blues over 126 years old , played by two great schools which even World War 1 and 11 could not halt despite all the fury, a game of cricket which is the second oldest in the World, a game that is older than the Ashes series between Australia and England, is indeed unique.

In Ceylon of the years gone by and Sri Lanka today, the Royal - Thomian cricket match is a undeclared holiday for the young and old of both schools . One cannot forget the fairer sex who has continued to add glamour to the event , irrespective of age .

Many great Prime Ministers , a former President, Ministers and leading citizens of the land in many fields have represented both schools in the Big Match . There has been many crickters representing Ceylon and Sri Lanka from both schools with distinction . Some have captained the National Team with much acceptance . Thomians and Royalist young and old, continue to share the friendly rivalry each year and has also continued to uphold the geatest traditions , competitors cannot boast about . There are many old boys from both schools domiciled abroad, attending the big match each year , sporting the school regalia.
