    Defending  champions Nalanda stun Royal
    by Reemus Fernando

A rejuvenated Nalanda College performed a major upset yesterday as they edged out Royal College, one of the favorites to the title, in the Inter- School Under-19 Limited Overs Knockout Tournament pre-quarter-final match played at Bloomfield Ground.

Nalanda beat Royal by six wickets to keep alive their dream of defending the Limited Overs Tournament title they won last year. After restricting them to a paltry 123 runs, the Nalandians chased the target for the loss of four wickets with as many as 20 overs to spare.

Nalanda who had enjoyed fluctuating fortunes during the two day tournament were the clear underdogs as they faced the formidable Royalists with a strong batting lineup. But after paceman Vimukthi Perera and leg-spinner Nipun Karunanayake shared five wickets between them to restrict Royal College to 123 runs they didn’t lose the grip on the game.

Bhanuka Rajapakse, who was selected for the Sri Lanka Under-19 team recently to tour Bangladesh and Kithruwan Withanage were the only batsmen to top 30 runs.

Chasing the target, Prashan Wickramasinghe and Chandimanthu Rodrigo chipped in with 32 and 27 runs respectively while Adeesha Nanayakkara and Dinuk Jayasinghe hit unbeaten 25 and 22 respectively.

Now Nalanda will meet Maliyadewa in the quarter-finals which will be played at CCC Ground on Saturday.

Royal 123 all out (28.3) Sahan Hettiarachchi 23, Bhanuka Rajapakse 32, Kithruwan Withanage 44; Vimukthi Perera 2/24, Nipun Karunanayake 3/06.

Nalanda 124 for four (29.3) Prashan Wickramasinghe 32, Chandimanthu Rodrigo 27, Adeesha Nanayakkara 25 n.o, Dinuk Jayasinghe 22 n.o; Yasith Abeykoon 2/32, Bhanuka Rajapakse 2/28.
