    An opening partnership of 104 runs between Gayan Manishan (39) and Tusitha Kumara (52) helped Maliyadeva College to post 270 for 6 and declare against their home town rivals St. Anne’s College in their 28th 'Battle of the Rocks' cricket encounter which began at the Welagedera Stadium, Kurunegala yesterday.


    Sri Lanka junior under 19 captain Vimanga Perera (52 not out) and Dasun Madumal 47 added 90 runs for the sixth wicket. Tusitha Kumara hit six fours in his 118 ball innings while Vimanga Perera scored an unbeaten 52 with 2 fours in 18 balls. The Annites were 36 for no loss at close on the first day. The match will be continued today.

    CRICKET: The 28th Battle of the Rocks ended with Maliyadeva College recording a first inning win over St. Anne's College at the picturesque Welagedara Stadium Kurunegala yesterday.

    Devans bagged the major honours in the game as they took away the awards for the Best Bowler's, Batsman's and the Man of the match trophy at the end.

    Annites started the day with a total of 36 on the board without losing any wickets. Kanumale departed with a score of 27 but Madushanka continued to help his team to a better position. Unfortunately he got out before reaching the half century. He was 49.

    Amaranath Wanninayake was the only big scorer down the batting order and he had a knock of 34 runs.

    Annites could not get near the declared first innings total of 270 runs of Devans. They ended up with 227 runs as Duminda Dissanayake came up with a brilliant spells to bag three wickets for 56 runs. Sanjeewa Bulathwala caused two dismissals of Annites with 2 for 32.

    Maliyadeva batsmen came into bat in the last part of the day and at the close, the scoreboard showed 58 for 3 in front of the Maliyadeva second innings total.

    St. Anne's: 227 (Yohan Kanumale 27, Rukshan Madushanka 49, Amaranath Wanninayake 34, Duminda Dissanayake 3 for 56, Sanjeewa Bulathwala 2 for 32)
