Ponting is a wise man.He will not go on like Jayasuriya and Miandad.I think Ponting will be aiming to retire after next ashes in AUS.Maybe he will give the captaincy to Clark after WC.
Assuming Ponting will play for 2 years,he will find it difficult to beat Sachin in terms of hundreds if Sachin makes 50.12 hundreds in 2 years is a difficult task.
In terms of runs, yes Ponting has a chance if Sachin retires after playing 6 or 7 tests in the future.
    Both are probable.

Lead now is about 1600 + whatever Sachin adds
2011 Ashes series on Aussie soil might be his best chance to retire with pride. If he goes beyond ashes he certainly has a chance to take over runs & hundreds.
am saying lets say the day sachin hangs up they hav the same diff like 8 hundreds and 1500 runs and from there ponting will hav 15-20 more matches. may be he will not score 8 hundreds but will surely score those 1500 lead easily

He didn't have to face Australia in the batsman dominated era. In the 90s there were only 2 batsmen had an average over 50. Tendulkar 58. Lara 52. Kambli got 54 for his few tests. In 2000s every tom, dick and harry average big. Punter made 257, 248 against India in Australia. Look at the attack. Agarkar, Murali Karthik, Kumble, Irfan Pathan (debut). I mean this attack is much weaker than the attack led by Heath Streak.

    ^^
Maybe Andy Flower & Steve Waugh hit the 50 mark by late 90's
BTW this is not a "who's better??? Ponting or Sachin???" Discussion
It's whether Ponting will go pass Sachin's records of Runs & Hundreds

Well Done Master, You are really a treat to watch. You are really the Best Player from the current lot considering the pressure you have from the Indian Fans and Press. I remember in 90's we all wanted you to score century in every match. I am not aware if Ricky Ponting or Lara had that pressure.

Being a mumbaikar myself we can never forget the post match discussions we used to have on the next day of a Cricket Match in Mumbai Local Trains.we used to love you, praise you and even criticize you as if we own you.

For the Test Matches we used to wait for your batting to come, bunk lectures/Job and come to Wankhede Stadium to watch you bat and leave the stadium as soon as you used to get out.

You used to bring a smile to our faces and millions of other fans each time you used to hit a century or play well.

Your Humble and Down to earth nature is a quality which you have inherited from your father who used to give free Tuitions(Knowledge) to the needy once in Mumbai (near Dadar station).

You truly a Legend and a Gem for India. We all are proud of you

That was not meant to be a disrespect to Sachin.ibadaman only excluded hundreds against BAN & ZIM.I excluded the full record.
Sachin faced more formidable attacks in his 20 years.

the best tribute is done by the man himself
    an extract from sehwags interview.
"We have had chats about him scoring 200. He thought it was difficult, but I told him only he could do it. Last year in New Zealand, when he retired on 163 I told him he had missed the opportunity, but he said "Agar meri kismat mein hoga toh woh mil jayega [It will eventually happen if I am destined to do it]." He said the same when he got 175 against Australia last year. On Wednesday he said "Woh likha tha, toh mil gaya [I got what was destined]". "

36 years old and able to accomplish this is amazing. I'd still point him behind Lara as the best batsman of his era but his record is astonishing. He was almost written off a few years back after he returned from injuries but his performances have been getting even better
